Happy Pod Year

Very shortly 2005 will come to a close for us folks on the East Coast of the United States. What a year it was in 2005. I discovered podcasting and was able to be a part of a burgeoning media revolution. In mid-February I created an account with Feedburner and began pumping out content. I started with music that I've been writing and recording for years. I moved on to the audiobook that I'd been recording. I added a few rants, talked about New York City and indulged my love of music. It became a veritable orgy of content known as Podcast NYC.

Along the way I noticed that I was gettng referrals from some site called Big Contact. As a result I discovered a cool service with a great RSS feed player and met a guy named Nat Guy with as much passion for music and technology as I have. Things got hot in early summer when Apple unleashed their iTunes podcast directory and Odeo was just sliding into beta. I hooked up an account with Audioblog so I could use their cool phone in podcast feature. I discovered that they also had a killer video publishing service at a ridiculously reasonable price. My bandwidth started to exceed it's limits at my web host so I started hosting files over at LibSyn. It was a good move.

I kept it rolling even after my wife delivered our first child on June 1st. Who knows why? It certainly wasn't for the money. I love to create and I've got a lot to say. I watch a lot less TV and that's a good thing I believe. Throughout the summer more and more people started coming to me wanting to be a part of podcasting. It became obvious that this thing called podcasting was really going to change things. The musicians, businesses, reporters and fans came a knockin. What a fun time.

Somewhere along the way iTunes decided to feature my New York Minute Show podcast prominently on the front page of iTunes podcast directory. Subscriptions doubled overnight and so did the emails. 'I must be doing something right", I thought. I'd also been doing some stuff with the Boomer Esiason Foundation when I was asked If I'd like to attend this podcast expo in Ontario, California.

Around the same time I attended a Brother Love show in NYC. I convinced Brolo that it would be a blast to head out to Califrnia and turn things upside down. The expo was a big hit and Brother Love played a great acoustic show along with Chance. We also started the Brother Love Podcast called Brother Love Notes and we've had a blast with those monthly recordings.

I knew that the Video iPod emergence would cange things even more so I made a concrted effort to add more video to the site and ended up starting Flow, a music video podcast from New York City. You'll see a lot more along those lines in 2006.

That said, I'm doing way too much and I'm going to be focusing on just a couple of channels in 2006 while occasionally posting to others. It's going to get a lot better. I can promise you that. I'll probably have a few more dust ups like the ones with Rocketboom and Eat Feed. I'm opinionated and confident but also experienced. I made some great friends in 2005 and I'll make more in 2006.

2006 is going to be a big year for podcasting. You just wait and see. I'll see you there.

Stone Casting

As a part time musician I'm always trying to get insights on the minds of the greats. And now Rolling Stone magazine is publishing podcasts via the iTunes music store. They've got several channels of podcasts including interviews with Bono and John Lennon. This represents a great use of the medium by a media outlet that's not traditionally in the audio medium.

New Look For The Blog

Well, really not new. I've just brought it in line with the rest of the site, which I think is good. I've also put some links on the left to make the blog more subscribe friendly.

Podcasting The Transit Strike

I'm testing out a new blogging app from a company called performancing. It's a nifty little plug in for Firefox that allows you to blog right from the browser. Tres cool.

Anyway, I've got a special NYC Transit Strike podcast up on my New York Minute Show site. I may even get out on the town to record some audio and video with the tired, hoofing masses.

Sweetwater Podcasting

If you're someone who knows a thing or two about musical gear or audio technology then there's a good chance that you've heard of Sweetwater. Sweetwater is a leader in the online sale of music and audio related gear, gadgets and goodies. I've used them many times and highly recommend checking them out for all of your gear and instrument needs. Even better, Sweetwater is recognizing podcasting in a big way. Their latest SweetNotes newsletter includes an article titled Podcasting 101 that points to their new podcasting page. The page has links to great information on what podcasting is all about, as well as a link to a page that allows you to upload your own podcasts in Sweetwater's RSS feed. This feature is reserved for music gear or technology related podcasts. So if you're podcasting on music gear and technology then this would be a great place to promote your show.

We've Been Spun

Mike over at the Garage Spin indie music blog has been nice enough to feature an interview with me about Podcast NYC. I'm always happy to talk about podcasting and so I really enjoyed this interview. You can check out the full interview here.

New Feedburner Features

Feedburner just keeps adding value to their RSS feed related services. They've added a new service called FeedFlare that enhances their BrowserFriendly feature and allows publishers to include links to email a particular feed item, email the feed publisher, save a feed item to del.icio.us, display a creative commons license and others. Good stuff. With all these added features, Feedburner is becoming more like a blog creation tool everyday. See what I mean by checking out my feed at http://feeds.feedburner.com/FlowVideo.

Closet Deadhead Podcast Kaput

Seems the Sam Whitmore has shut down his Closet Deadhead podcast. Real bummer. The site is still up but you can't get to any of the MP3s.

iTunes Category Top 100

Thanks to Steve Rubel for pointing out the fact that the iTunes podcast directory now has top 100 lists for different categories. I'm lucky enough to have The New York Minute Show in the top 15 not once but twice. New York Minute Show Video is sitting at #4 and the audio is at #13 as we speak. That could all change of course but it's nice to know that we're getting the content out there.

HBO Adds Podcasts

Steve Rubel pointed me to this very cool and exciting piece of information. As a fan of Curb Your Enthusiasm and Entourage I'll be subscribing and I can't wait for the Deadwood podcasts.

HBO Adds Podcasts, Including Bill Maher: "

HBO has added a bunch of audio podcasts to iTunes including Rome, snippets of Curb Your Enthusiasm and full episodes of Real Time with Bill Maher! (All links require iTunes. The podcasts are not on the HBO site right now.)

Get Your Flow

I've been posting lightly here over the last couple of weeks and things have slowed down on some of the other channels here at Podcast NYC. That's what happens when you're launching a new channel. The channel I speak of is called Flow and it features audio and video podcasts of live music directly from New York City.

We've gotten season 1 of Flow into full swing, haven filmed five episodes to date. Each episode will be released in video (iPod friendly of course) and audio form so that folks have the maximum options for getting their flow.

Find out more over at http://www.getyourflow.com/.
