My Pod Is Safe

On today's episode of The Daily Source Code I heard Adam Curry say something that disturbed me quite a bit. He says something about the Podsafe Music Network being the only safe place to get podsafe music. What he says exactly is, "You pretty much want to stay away from everything else."

Here's my question for Adam. Why should people stay away from everything else? Oh because all you do is shamelessly promote your music database at the exclusion of other folks who members of your "Pod Squad" have used to find some of the best podsafe music in the first place.

Well I may not have a PR machine, a CEO or a deal with Logitech but I do get approval for every song that I place on my Podsafe Music page. These are songs by artists who want their music picked up and shared by others as a promotional tool. And while I have no problem with Adam pimping his property, he shouldn't be so arrogant as to dismiss all of us non-VC funded podsafe music distributors.

I'll see you at the Podcast Expo dude.

I hate to say it but shameless exploitation of independent artists for the benefit of growing the pocketbook exponentially is not safe from any angle. Have you read the PMN TOA? Me too... Let me just say it's a good thing that agreements are only valid if enforced...

It's always tricky when you sell advertising on a site where indie musicians are providing their music for free. Fairness would dictate that the folks who are providing the content be entitled to a piece of that action. I do know that Adam and Co. are planning on adding some kind of distribution component that allows artists to get paid. Then again, CD Baby has been doing the same thing very well for years. And CD Baby is working on their own podsafe music database which will definitely be a strong alternative to the podsafe music network. In the end I hope that indie guys like me who contact musicians directly and search for excellent music get a fair shake. Having a prominent voice in the medium attempt to dissuade people from taking part in sites like mine is definitely not a fair shake.
